Mrs. Richardson's Hannan Happenings

                                                                                                                   September 7th, 2020

Dear Kindergarten Parents,

I look forward to seeing your child on Monday, September 14th.   Each day your child will need to bring a bag or backpack with his or her blue communicator which contain papers from school.  Inside the communicator, there will also be an August calendar which notes the number of points your child earned that day.   PBIS is the name of the program what we use to keep up with the number of points your child has earned for appropriate behavior.  The total number of points your child can earn is 125 points for the week.  If your child demonstrates additional appropriate behaviors such as helping a child clean his area, or shares something with a friend, or pays a compliment to a student or adult, he or she may earn more than 125 points.  Some of the expected appropriate behaviors that your child can earn a point for include:  participating and completing classwork in reading, language arts, social studies, science, and mathematics, following directions in connections such as the media center, guidance, and computer lab, cleaning up his or her area, respecting peers and adults, being on time to school, and wearing his or her uniform.  Furthermore, students can earn more than 25 points a day if he or she demonstrates additional appropriate behavior such as helping a friend clean his or her area, and paying compliments to peers and adults.    If your child earns from 120-125 points for the week, he or she will be able to choose an item from the treat box.  Please initial the August calendar each day so that I know you are aware of your child’s behavior.

On your child’s birthday, you may send cupcakes or another snack which will be passed out to the children during lunch time.  Our lunch time will be from 10:10- 10:40.  Your child will also receive a birthday ribbon from the office and a pencil and bookmarker from me.  Your child will have his or her chair decorated with a birthday seat cover.  If your child’s birthday is in the summer, we can celebrate at the end of May.

Please remember that in kindergarten your child does not receive a letter grade.  Your child’s progress will be measured in terms of meeting the standard, progressing towards meeting the standard, or not showing any progress toward meeting the standard.  If your child has not met a particular standard by the end of the first nine weeks, he or she may meet the standard at a later time in the school year.

Finally, homework will not include an hour of drilling skills each evening at home.  You should review the letter/letter sound and sight word or math skill such as counting to 10 each day of the week.   I encourage you to read to your child daily, play word games review numbers, etc.  Later, when your child begins to read, he or she may take a book home.  I may send a sheet home occasionally if students are having difficulty with a particular standard.  These papers will be sent home on Monday.  The standards that I will be teaching each week will be listed on my weekly newsletter.

I know that together we will make your child’s kindergarten year a great one!

Sincerely,

Tiffany Richardson
